Solar Oven Partners

We're Looking for Potholders!
Get Those Sewing Machines Humming

Beginning in 2016, Solar Oven Partners UMC (SOP) began including two colorful potholders with each oven we distribute. The potholders help protect the hands of oven recipients when removing the hot pots from very hot solar ovens.

These aren't just any potholders, but uniformly made colorful pocket potholders that provide extra protection. And the first call for potholders brought a heart-warming response.

"The blessings of potholders showered upon us to date has been enormous," says retired SOP Director and now volunteer Rick Jost. However, with a new partnership budding with Sierra Leone, and growing numbers of ovens being distributed in the Dominican Republic, Jost says the need for additional potholders is urgent.

"We have about 1,200 potholders in the shelf in the Volga shop, and although we've received several hundred more than that from our sewing partners, some of those sewn to date have already been distributed in the Dominican Republic and in our pilot projects," says Rick. "We are now looking for 2,500 more potholders. We know the potholders are sewn with love, one at a time, and any number sewn by any individual or team will be gratefully received."

Potholder Sewers Asked to Follow SOP Pattern
To ensure that each oven recipient receives the same size, shape and style of potholder, it’s very important that our volunteer sewers follow the SOP potholder pattern (click on link to the right), but feel free to use your choice of cotton prints or your favorite colors.

It’s also important that we track the number of potholders being made. If an individual, church or organization will commit to sewing potholders, we ask them to contact Rick Jost ( or 605-692-3391) and state the number of potholders they are willing to sew and the date Rick can expect them to be delivered to SOP. Potholders can also be taken to the Dakotas Conference Annual Conference in Bismarck June 8-12.

If you’d like to be part of this sewing ministry we’d love to have you on the team. Just print out our pattern, get the necessary materials, warm up your sewing machine and give Rick a call or shoot him an e-mail. Sewers, let’s get busy!
